Iran, Oman to launch new direct shipping line

TEHRAN (Tasnim) A new direct shipping line linking Iran's southern port of Shahid Rajaee and the Omani port city of Sohar will be established next month to facilitate the transport of agricultural products and perishable goods between the two countries.

The new shipping route will be opened on May 15 under a trilateral agreement among the chambers of commerce of Iran and Oman and an Iranian private sector company engaged in sea transportation business.

According to Abdolhossein Khederi, CEO of the Iranian firm, three vessels, including two container ships and a bulk carrier, will start crisscrossing between the two ports every 15 days in the initial phase.

If exporters welcome the new service, more capacious freighters will be employed even on a weekly basis, he added.

The ships employed in the line will be equipped with refrigerated containers, since the route will be used to transport agricultural products and perishable foods, Khederi explained.

The two Muslim nations of Iran and Oman enjoy amicable ties in all fields.

In June 2014, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the areas of farming and fisheries.

Iranian Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Hojjati and his Omani counterpart Fuad Bin Ja'afar Al Sajwani signed the MOU in Tehran.
