Iran reiterates call for Int'l campaign against violence, extremism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a meeting with the new Thai ambassador to Tehran on Monday, called for the reinvigoration of international efforts to combat violence and terrorism worldwide.

"Fight against violence and terrorism needs more cooperation among the world states," the Iranian president stressed in the meeting.

He further said that Iran and Thailand should expand their cooperation in area of campaign against violence.

"Iran is ready to boost its all-out ties with Thailand, and the country's government bodies will cooperate with any Thai firm interested in enhancing ties with Iran," President Rouhani added.

"The current year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Tehran-Bangkok diplomatic ties, which have always been friendly all throughout the last 6 decades," the Thai envoy said.

"I do my best to consolidate bilateral relations and cooperation," the Thai ambassador added.

In December 2014, participants in the first international conference on 'World Against violence and Extremism (WAVE)' in Tehran in their final statement asked the world governments, politicians and religious leaders to condemn terrorism, violence and extremism in all forms.

The WAVE conference in Tehran came in the aftermath of a last year proposal by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during his address to the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on September 25, 2013, which received the approval of the UNGA after being endorsed by an overwhelming majority of the member states on December 18, 2013.

Also, the participants in the Tehran conference welcomed the proposal in their final statement, and underscored the necessity for the world states, politicians and religious leaders to condemn terrorism, violence and extremism in all forms.

They also underlined the necessity for adopting measures to eliminate poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment as the main sources feeding extremism.

The participants also urged the world states to prevent the trafficking of terrorists and radicalized groups at their borders and take serious steps to stop their infiltration on their territories.
