Moscow will deliver modernized versions of the S-300 missile defense systems, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan told RIA Novosti on Friday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) On April 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree lifting the cancellation ofthe S-300 air defense systems sale, originally put intoplace followingthe 2010 UN Security Council embargo onarms deliveries toTehran.
It should be noted that the Russian side has included some definite improvements tothe system that we need tolearn fromthe technical point ofview.
Dehghan said that no additional Russian specialists would be needed sinceall ofthe Iranian specialists working withthe system had already gone throughtraining.
The necessary training skills forusing this system were held duringthe previous contract so we dont need toinvite any [Russian] consultants togive instructions onusing this system, he added.Putin's decision tolift the S-300 sales ban took place two weeks afterTehran and world agreed ona framework fora deal todetail Iran's nuclear program. The framework involves sanctions againstIran, including the arms embargo, being phased outover time. The final deal is expected byJuly 2015.
On Thursday, the Russian President Putin said that there were no reasons forMoscow tokeep the embargo onproviding Iran withS-300 missile defense systems, underlining that it is a purely defensive weapon.
The same day, Irans Defense Ministry said the S-300 deal could be closed bythe end of2015.
