Iran's annual drug abuse exceeds 500 tons

Ilam, Jan 7, IRNA Deputy Secretary General for Campaign against Drug-Trafficking Headquarters Alireza Jazini said on Wednesday that the annual abuse of traditional and industrial drugs in Iran exceeds 500 tons a year.
Some 243 million people round the globe are addicts to various types of drugs out of which some 200,000 lose their lives due to the abuse of drugs, he said.
Some 60 percent use Hashish and Marijuana and some 60 millions use heroin, he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran carried out various programs in cooperation with the UN Drug Control Program to fight abuse of drugs and addiction, Jazini said.

Some 3,700 Iranian police forces have attained martyrdom in fight with drug traffickers and over 12,000 others have been injured or mutilated, he said.

Over 35 percent of the heroin and 85 percent of world opium contraband are intercepted in Iran each year, he said.
