A deadly stampede has ruined New Year celebrations in Shanghai, killing at least 35 and leaving dozens injured, officials say.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Wednesday (1535 GMT), when huge crowds began to stampede in Chen Yi Square on the city's well-known riverfront tourist strip, known as the Bund.

Many of the wounded victims have been taken to Shanghai General Hospital. The reason behind the stampede is still under investigation, the government said.

Replete with narrow streets, restored old buildings, shops, and sights, the Bund riverfront is a historic tourist attraction, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River, facing Pudong, in the eastern part of Huangpu District.

The annual New Year’s Eve countdown on the Bund normally attracts about 300,000 people. However, authorities had cancelled the countdown due to crowd control issues, Chinese media reported last week.

According to a report, nearly 300,000 people had showed up for New Year's Eve celebrations last year, which led to traffic problems in the most populated city of China.
