Norway to research Caspian-Urmia water transfer

TEHRAN, Dec. 30 (MNA) Research and study of the project of transferring water from Caspian Sea to Lake Urmia is assigned to a Norwegian company.
Isa Bozorgzadeh, research executive in Organization of Water and Energy Resources Development, announced that Iran has been negotiating with the group 'Research Sector' under the supervision of Akvaplan (Niva) company of Norway and practical solutions have been discussed on transferring water from Caspian Sea to Lake Urmia.


He emphasized that the project is a critical national one and would have different impacts on environment, therefore we asked Akvaplan company to help us due to its experiences in issues and projects concerning water.


Meanwhile Mohammadreza Rezazadeh, director of OWERD, said the issue of Lake Urmia is a concerning issue for Iran as the climate change and mismanagement of water resources have caused problems for lakes and ponds.


He asserted that the issue needs a scientific comprehensive solution due to its importance. Regarding the vital environmental role of Lake Urmia, the project needs studies and researches and we have tried to cooperate with high-profiled experts in this field, he added.


Saroun, Director of Akvaplan, for his part, highlighted the importance of project and said we had long sessions of discussion with the Iranian side. We have formed an international team for this project and hope to advance it without any problem.


Pointing to the visit the team will have this week to the Lake and meeting with local experts in Urmia, He stressed the vitality of the project and the determination behind it.


Lake Urmia is a salt lake in northwestern Iran near Iran's border with Turkey. The lake has been shrinking for a long time, turning into a salt marsh which will directly affect the climate of the region.
