IRGC commander extends condolences over martyrdom of advisor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari offered his condolences on Monday over the martyrdom of an IRGC military advisor, General Hamid Taqavi, killed in the Iraqi city of Samarrah during an advisory mission.
Jafari in a message condoled with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and Taqavi's family, and described General Taqavi as "a brave warrior".

General Jafari stressed that Taqavi never gave up protecting the high Islamic values.

A one-time commander during the 8-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s, General Taqavi lost his life in Samarrah while performing an advisory mission in the fight against the ISIL and Takfiri terrorists," IRGC Public Relations Department stated on Sunday.

Iran was the first country that helped Iraq fight the ISIL terrorists upon the request of Iraqi government. Tehran has already made it clear that its assistance to Iraq is confined to consultation and advisory help.

The ISIL and Takfiri terrorists, backed by Western powers and their regional allies, have seized large swathes of land in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

Meanwhile, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the popular forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive.
