Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas says �the world is standing� with Palestine amid efforts for the recognition of the Palestinian state.
He said in a Saturday message to activists of the Fatah movement in the West Bank city of Nablus that several important European countries have voted in favor of recognizing Palestine as an independent state, Israel's Jerusalem Post newspaper reported.

�Despite the challenges, pressure and conspiracies, we are in a very strong political position,� the Palestinian president said, adding, �The world is on our side.�

Abbas said that in light of worldwide support, the Palestinians feel strong enough to go to the UN Security Council and push for a resolution that determines the borders of a future Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 lines.

He pointed out that Palestinians would join more international organizations and treaties in case the proposed resolution fails at the Security Council.

The draft resolution, approved by the Arab League in September, sets 2016 as the date for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian territories.

The text is also expected to lay out a timeframe for negotiations on a final peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said on December 26 that the 15-member council would vote on a draft resolution by December 29.

In 1967, Israel occupied the West Bank, East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip but withdrew from the enclave and lay a siege on it in 2005.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories.
