TEHRAN (FNA)- British Labor lawmaker Jeremy Bernard Corbyn reiterated Iran's influential role in the region, and said he is looking for London's constructive interaction with Iran."We will try to create an atmosphere of constructive interaction between Iran and Britain," Corbyn said in London on Saturday.
He underlined that the members of Britain-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group are interested in expediting normalization of London-Tehran ties and also reopening of embassies in the two countries' capital cities.
He pointed to the exchange of diplomats between the two countries, and said, "The Iranian parliamentarians were scheduled to visit London in mid-2014 that was postponed to later this year; hence, Britain-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group voices its willingness again for the presence of Iranian representatives in Britain."
Asked about the topics of discussion with Iranian parliamentary delegation in London, Corbyn said we will most probably discuss nuclear issue, economic exchanges, boosting the political relations and studying the ways to reopen the embassies.
"I hope that we could portray a clear image of Iran's strategic status and its constructive role in the region and subsequently reduce the western sanctions imposed against Tehran," the British MP added.
In October 2013, Iran and Britain agreed to announce the names of their non-resident charges daffaires.
In mid-February 2014, Iran's non-resident Charge d'Affaires to Britain Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh announced that Iran and Britain officially resumed direct diplomatic talks.
In December, 2013, Britain's non-resident Charge d'Affaires to Iran Ajay Sharma who had traveled to Iran for an official visit expressed pleasure in his talks with his Iranian counterpart and other officials in Tehran.
Sharma's visit was the first British diplomat to travel to the country since ties were severed in 2011.
In a meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York City on September 23, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and former British Foreign Secretary William Hague discussed improvement of Tehran-London relations, Irans nuclear energy program as well as regional developments.
On November 27, 2011, Iranian lawmakers voted by a large majority to downgrade diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom, in response to Britain's decision to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran over the allegation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Two days after the decision by the Iranian parliament, hundreds of Iranian students staged a protest outside the British Embassy in Tehran and pulled down the UK flag.
On November 30, 2011, London cut off its ties with Tehran, withdrew its diplomatic staff from Iran and the Iranian Embassy in London was closed.
