Yukiya Amano says the International Atomic Energy Organization needs 4.6 million euros ($5.7 million.) He spoke Thursday at a special meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation board called to discuss funding needs.
The interim deal was extended last month to allow Tehran and six world powers to continue negotiations on a longer-term agreement that would reduce nuclear activities Iran could use to make weapons in exchange for sanctions relief.
With the six powers interested in making a deal, they and like-minded countries are expected to meet Amano's request.
Tehran denies wanting nuclear arms.
