Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iran's Minister of Interior stated that the production of drugs in Afghanistan saw a 17 percent increase this year due to US complicity.
MOSCOW, December 8 (Sputnik) The production ofdrugs inAfghanistansaw a 17 percent increase this year due toUS complicity, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iran's Minister ofInterior said onMonday.
"The planting ofnarcotics inAfghanistan saw a 17 percent this year, meaning that the US's efforts inthe country do not control this process, butalso led toincreased production [of drugs]," Fazli said duringhis meeting withthe head ofRussia's Federal Drug Control Service Viktor Ivanov.
Fazli stated that drug dealers and smugglers support political and religious extremism inthe country and expressed his regret overthe lack ofaid toIran fromthe European Union.
During the meeting the two sides discussed the results oftheir cooperation and devised new methods tosubvert the illegaldrug industry.
Russian Federal Drug Control Service has been cooperating withits Iranian counterpart sincesigning a memorandum oncooperation incombating trafficking ofillegal drugs in2005.
Effectiveness oftheRussian-Iranian cooperationcan be demonstrated bythe "Clean Caspian" operations. Conducted in2011 and 2014, they were aimed atinterrupting drug smuggling channels withinthe Caspian Basin. Russia and Iran also cooperate asparts ofthe Caspian Anti-Drug 5 group, comprising ofRussia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, aimed atdevelopment ofanti-drug policies inthe Caspian region.
