The European Union seeks to push Turkey to step up its engagement in the fight against the ISIL Takfiri terrorists.
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides will travel to Turkey on Monday and Tuesday.

Mogherini said in a statement, The visit ... is a strong indication of the strategic importance of the EU-Turkey relationship and our desire to step up engagement.

The EU officials are scheduled to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

According to the UN Security Council, 15,000 people from more than 80 countries are estimated to have flocked to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside ISIL and other such groups.

The 28-nation bloc has called for the Turkish government to assist in the identification of foreign fighters working with ISIL and other militant groups.

Turkey has been negotiating to join the European Union since 2005. Some EU countries have resisted the Turkish membership, which has slowed the progress.
