Tajik envoy underlines necessity for increasing trade ties with Iran to $300mln

TEHRAN (FNA)- Tajik Ambassador to Tehran Nematollah Imamzadeh stressed the abundant economic and industrial capacities of Iran and Tajikistan, and announced plans to increase trade exchanges between the two countries to $300mln.
"We have plans to increase the trade and commercial exchanges to $300mln and this is easy and available given the trade, commercial and industrial possibilities that the two countries have," Imamzadeh told FNA on Sunday.

He said that Iran is among Tajikistan's top 10 trade partners.

Imamzadeh also welcomed presence of the Iranian companies in Tajikistan, and said Iran has adopted positive measures for economic progress and development of Tajikistan after the latter's independence, including the construction of Sangtoudeh-II Dam and Power Plant.

The Tajik diplomat also underscored his country's cooperation with Iran in the regional and international bodies, and said Tajikistan supports Tehran's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Imamzadeh added that Dushanbe also supports Iran's peaceful nuclear program, and expressed the hope that the nuclear talks between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) would yield good results and lead to a final deal.

In September, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon inaugurated the Phase-II of Sangtoudeh-II Dam and Power Plant, which was constructed through Iran's major partnership.

Sangtoudeh-II power plant has the capacity to produce 220 megawatts of electricity. It will increase Tajikistan's annual electricity output to 1bln kilowatt/hours.

Iran has contributed $180bln to construction of Sangtoudeh-II and Tajikistan's share is $40bln. The power plant's construction work began on September 5, 2011 at the presence of the Iranian and Tajik presidents.

Sangtoudeh-II is located 120 km Southeast of the Capital city of Dushanbe.

Also in September, Rouhani and his Tajik counterpart in a meeting in Tajikistan signed 10 cooperation pacts and a joint statement.

The cooperation pacts signed by the Iranian and Tajik presidents in Dushanbe included security agreements between the two countries' interior ministries, an agreement on fighting drug trafficking and a cooperation pact between Iranian and Tajik chambers of commerce as well as a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran's Persian Language Academy and Tajikistan's Language and Reforms Committee.
