National Security Council Spokesperson refuted reports on the United States allegedly going to open a trade office in Iran.WASHINGTON, November 10 (Sputnik) The recent reports suggesting the United States is planning toset upa trade office inIran are false, National Security Council Spokesperson told Sputnik onMonday.
"Reports that the United States is considering opening a trade office inIranare false. There is no such consideration or discussion," Bernadette Meehan said.
Earlier onMonday, The Times reported that the two countries are holding talks onrenewing diplomatic relations, which can pave the way forthe opening ofa US trade office inTehran.
According tothe newspaper, a series ofmeetings betweenUS and Iranian diplomats was held onthe sidelines oftalks onthe Iranian nuclear deal betweenIranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, his US counterpartJohn Kerryand former EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton inthe Omani capital, Muscat.
The Times pointed outthat reaching a final agreement onIran's nuclear programbeforethe November 24 deadline may mean Tehran would permit a limited US diplomatic mission inIran.
The West has accused Tehran ofdeveloping a nuclear weapon. Iran has denied the accusations, stressing the peaceful nature ofits nuclear program. During talks held inGeneva in2013, mediators agreed toreach a deal guaranteeing the peaceful nature ofthe Iranian nuclear program byJuly 2014. The deadline forthe agreement was later postponed toNovember 2014.
The United States and Iran have not had formal diplomatic relations sincethe 1979 Islamic Revolution inIran, which brought topower anti-Western clerics.
