Iran to enhance oil recovery by CO2 injection

TEHRAN Nov. 1 (Shana)--Iran is set to enhance recovery from an oil field for the first time by injecting carbon dioxide, director for research and technology of National Iranian Oil Company has said.
Mohammad-Ali Emadi said studies related to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by CO2 injection have already been concluded.

The project is to be carried out at Ramin oil field in the oil-rich southwestern city of Ahvaz.

At first, this project will be executed on a pilot scale. Carbon dioxide will be taken from Ramin Power Plant in Ahvaz to be injected into Ramin field, which holds heavy crude, after purification, he said.

Emadi noted that CO2 injection into oil fields can boost recovery rate by 16 to 80 percent.

He said some 80 CO2-injection EOR projects have so far been carried out in the world, giving 300,000 b/d in extra recovery.

Emadi said Hungary has been injecting CO2 into reservoirs for enhanced recovery for five decades.
