A senior Iranian diplomat has censured the United States for supporting the Takfiri groups operating against the Syrian government, saying Washington should reconsider such policies.
In a Wednesday meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson in Tehran, Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian criticized US-led airstrikes purportedly targeting ISIL positions in Syria as well as Washingtons double standards in dealing with terrorism.

The US is making a strategic mistake by arming anti-Syria Takfiri groups, said Amir-Abdollahian,adding that Washington should reconsider this policy.

The Iranian official further reaffirmed Tehrans support for Syrias sovereignty and the right of its people to decide their political future on their own.

Eliasson, in turn, described extremism as the major problem in the Middle East, calling for collective efforts to counter terror threats in the troubled region.

The senior UN official also called for a halt in the flow of weapons and funds to the Takfiri militants wreaking havoc in Syria.

Militants from the ISIL Takfiri groups have seized large swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, terrorizing all communities during their advances in both neighboring Arab countries.

Since late September, the US and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against the ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

Washington has also been carrying out similar air raids against ISIL positions in Iraq since August. However, the raids have so far failed to dislodge theISIL.

Analysts have questioned Washingtons sincerity in its fight against terror as the US and many of the parties to the so-called anti-ISIL alliance have been among the major supporters of the Takfiri terrorists working to topple the Syrian government since March 2011.
