An Iranian official says Tehran is among the main victims of international crimes, particularly the use of chemical weapons and that the International Criminal Court (ICC) must act strictly against those that committed the crimes.Irans Ambassador to Amsterdam Alireza Jahangiri, in a Tuesday meeting with the ICCs President Judge Sang-Hyun Song, also criticized the international community for failing to take any action to punish and put on trial those who are committing international crimes, including the users of chemical weapons.
The envoy said Iran supports the impartial and independent measures of the ICC.
According to reports, the use of chemical weapons by Baghdad, under the deposed dictator Saddam Hussein, during the eight-year Iraqi war imposed on Iran (1980-1988) inflicted over 100,000 casualties on the Iranian side. Many are dying on a daily basis as a result of having been affected by the gas. Around 20,000 Iranian soldiers were killed instantly by nerve gas during the war.
The Iranian city of Sardasht was the main target of Iraqs chemical bombardments during the war. The city was attacked with mustard gas bombs twice.
Iran has slammed Western countries for providing the former Iraqi regime with chemical arms in the 1980s.
The ICC president, for his part, said Iran has an important position in the Middle East region.
