Iran to inaugurate first geothermal power plant
TEHRAN (Tasnim) Irans first geothermal power plant located near the northwestern city of Meshkin Shahr will be operational when the turbines are installed there, Managing Director of Renewable Energy Organization of Iran Yousef Armodeli announced.

Currently, we are at the stage of purchasing turbines which will be installed in the drilled wells," Armodeli told the Tasnim News Agency on Tuesday.

Up to now, 11 wells have been drilled and tested in the site, 7 of which have reached geothermal reservoirs, he said.

The plan for purchasing turbines needed for the 5-megawatt power plant has been put out to tender, he said, adding that the pilot plant will be operational when the turbines are installed.

Geothermal power stations are similar to other steam turbine thermal power stations heat from a fuel source (in geothermal's case, the earth's core) is used to heat water or another working fluid.

The working fluid is then used to turn a turbine of a generator, thereby producing electricity. The fluid is then cooled and returned to the heat source.
