Iranian FM, UN envoy for Syria meet in New York

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura held a meeting in New York to discuss the latest developments in the war-hit Arab country and ways to fight terrorism in the region.
During the meeting on Tuesday evening, Zarif welcomed de Mistura's view exchanges with the Syrian officials and different groups to reach a comprehensive political agreement, and underlined the need for effective and unbiased activity of the UN envoy for Syria.

He referred to the presence of different terrorist groups in Syria, specially the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and said, "Fighting terrorism that the Islamic Republic of Iran had stressed as its priority since the very first day, has today turned into a priority for the international community."

De Mistura, for his part, underlined the necessity for reaching comprehensive reconciliation among all sides in Syria, and said he has had meetings with President Bashar al-Assad and other officials as well as moderate opposition groups in the country and plans to meet the regional officials, including Iranians, in his upcoming visits to different countries of the region.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday underscored Tehran's major and important role in settling different problems in the region.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran plays a constructive and effective role in resolving the regional crises and need for making greater use of Iran's potentials and capabilities and to solve the current problems in the region is necessary today," Ban Ki-moon said during the meeting in New York.

He emphasized that Iran was a major player also in the Persian Gulf region and could play important roles using its broad capacities and capabilities.
