The two-day visit of the UN USG Valerie Amos began on Sunday 17 August. Its objectives were to engage with the Government of Iran on pressing humanitarian crises in the region, specifically Syria, Iraq and Gaza. She also aimed to discuss Irans capacity to respond to natural disasters in the region through humanitarian assistance.
During her visit, she met Foreign Minister Dr. Javad Zarif, Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Amir-Abdollahian, Head of the Iranian National Disaster Management Organization (NDMO) and the President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Dr. Farhadi.
In her meetings with these high-ranking officials, discussions centred on Irans capacities in relief and rescue operations. Ms. Amos called for the continuation of the countrys sustained support in helping the dispatch and delivery of humanitarian aid to the people affected in crises in the region.
On Monday, 18 August, Ms. Amos met Deputy Foreign Minister Araghchi and delivered a key-note speech in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day 2014 which was held at the Iranian Centre for International Conferences at the Foreign Ministry.
