TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Azeri officials in a meeting in Baku explored avenues for boosting mutual border cooperation between the two countries.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between Commander of the Iranian Border Guard Units General Qassem Rezayee and Azeri Interior Minister General Ramil Usubov in Baku on Monday.

During the meeting, the Iranian border guard commander pointed to the current status in the bilateral relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, and said, "Iran's foreign policy is based on expansion of relations with its neighboring countries and deepening of bilateral ties with Baku is of paramount importance."

He pointed to a recent visit of Azeri President Ilham Aliyev to Iran and the emphasis laid by the two countries' presidents on the broadening of bilateral ties, specially in fighting drug trafficking, and said, "I hope that border guard units of Iran and Azerbaijan could enhance their mutual cooperation in this field."

The Azeri interior minister, for his part, voiced his country's willingness to cooperate with Iran in fighting drug transit and trafficking, confronting organized crimes and exchange of experiences between the two countries' police forces through holding training courses.

Iran has recently enhanced efforts to boost political, economic, security and cultural ties and cooperation with the regional and neighboring countries, specially the Central Asian states, including the republic of Azerbaijan.
