TEHRAN, Aug. 18 (MNA) A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude on Richter scale struck southern part of Ilam province, west of Iran.The epicenter of the quake was about 36 kilometers southeast of Abdanan with 10km depth. The tremor occurred at 7:02 am local time, 2:32 am GMT.
Abdanans regional governor told Mehr News local correspondent that drink water and temporary housing of victims of the quake were two urgent needs of people in the region.
70-80 per cent of houses and buildings in Mourmouri have sustained damages, added the governor. Mehr News correspondent reports that the most urgent needs of victims are lack of tents, mineral drink water and temporary housing under extreme heat of 50 degrees Celsius.
Head of Illam Red Crescent Society also told Mehr News that following the news of quake in the Mourmouri (southwestern Ilam) and the power outage and water shortage, staple foods and water had been sent to the region. Mohammad Soleimani said that the rescue teams were active in the region setting up tents for temporary housing of the quake-hit public. Water is an emergent need in the region, he added.
Mourmouris county sheriff Nasser Nouri said that 12 out of 260 injured were lifted to hospitals in neighboring provinces due to the severity of damage.
The head of Lorestans Disaster Management Headquarters said they responded to requests for urgent need to water by Abdanan local officials and sent 3 water tanks to Mourmouri. Reza Ariaie said tanks were dispatched to the region by the provinces Rural Water and Wastewater Co.
Poledokhtar and Khorram Abad have sent also water tanks to the quake-hit regions, he added.
The strong quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks including one 5.6 magnitude at 9:55 local time and several with 4.7 and 4.9 scales.
