Tehran, Aug. 14, IRNA Vice-President and head of Iran Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Ali-Akbar Salehi, in a message on Thursday, congratulated Pro. Maryam Mirzakhani on winning the Fields Medal known as ?the Nobel Prize of mathematics.?
In his message, Salehi said that receiving the most prestigious honor in mathematics by an Iranian woman who has been graduated from Tehran?s Sharif University of Technology is a glorious victory for Iran?s scientific and academic community and indicates endless capability of Iranian women in reaching peaks of honor.
Salehi wished success and prosperity for Ms. Mirzakhani.
Fields Medal is awarded every 4 years to between 2 and 4 young mathematicians who must be no older than 40.
Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University is the first woman ever to win the prize since it was established in 1936.
She was awarded the Fields Medal for her sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems.
