Irans Department of the Environment had announced that the minister of power has accepted the plan to dismantle a number of dams in order to revive Lakes Oroumiyeh and Hamoon.
Esmail Kahrom, the Department of the Environment aide for natural resources, said the Ministry of Power has concluded that building dams on rivers has led to the drying of Oroumiyeh and Hamoon, and a number of these dams must come down.
Kahrom confirmed that rising temperatures and climate change also contributed significantly to the drying of the lakes.
He added that in recent weeks the plan for bringing down a number of the dams has been approved and it is aimed at reviving 40 percent of Lake Oroumiyeh at least.
