ITU chief lauds Irans progress in telecommunications
TEHRAN (Tasnim) Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) praised Iran for its eye-catching progress in the field of telecommunications systems, hoping for the countrys more significant role in the global communication trends.

I am stunned by the degree of development in Irans switch and optical fiber infrastructures, Hamadoun Toure stated after paying a visit to a telecommunications complex in Tehran.

He explained that an increase in the number of Irans international gateways is indicative of the countrys key role in communications across the region.

There are currently some 45 million internet users in Iran. The Islamic Republic is seen as the leading country in the Middle East region in terms of Internet penetration. It has already been awarded the UNESCO special certificate for providing telecommunication services to rural areas.
