Iranian karate practitioners have exhibited impressive performances in the 9th edition of the Fdration Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Karate Championship in Montenegro, and won the second place.Japan topped the medal table with five gold, one silver and two bronze, followed by Iran with three golds, one silver and four bronze medals.
Egypt came next with two gold medals, three silvers and one bronze. Slovakia ranked fourth in the overall medal count with one gold, three silvers and one bronze.
On Sunday, Iranian team, comprised of Saeed Ahmadi, Sajjad Ganjzadeh, Ebrahim Hassanbeigi, Ali Fadakar, Amir Mehdizadeh and Zabihollah Poursheib, overcame the Maccedonian side in the final round of men's kumite contests to clinch the gold medal.
The Iranian mens kumite squad had earlier defeated Taiwan, Brazil and Azerbaijan in its march to the final.
The development came two day after Hamideh Abbasali of Iran snatched a bronze medal in the womens +68-kilogram kumite contests after trouncing her Chinese opponent.
Iranian athlete Ganjzadeh also brought home a bronze in men's +84-kilogram kumite competitions on Thursday, while Rosita Alipour grabbed a silver medal in womens minus 61-kilogram kumite contests on Friday after failing in her attempts to beat an athlete from Slovakia.
Moreover, Poursheib was awarded a bronze in the mens minus 84-kilogram kumite competitions on Friday.
On Saturday, Mehizadeh collected Irans first gold medal in mens minus 60-kilogram kumite competitions after he defeated his Egyptian opponent in the final contest.
Later in the day, Iranian team received the bronze medal in women's kumite competitions. Sahar Karaji scooped Irans second gold medal after defeating her Slovakian rival in the final competition of womens minus 50-kilogram kumite section.
The 9th edition of FISU World University Karate Championship opened in the coastal town of Bar in southern Montenegro on June 18, and wrapped up on June 22.
The sports event brought together 319 male and female karate fighters from 47 nations, including Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brazil, Egypt, France, Hungary, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Macedonia, Slovakia and Taiwan.
