Iran to turn southern ports into petchem hub
TEHRAN (FNA)- Deputy Head of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Mohammad Hassan Peyvandi informed that Iran is resolved to boost its share in supplying the international markets with quality petrochemicals, saying Iranian ports on the rims of the Sea of Oman will host a new petrochemical hub in the region.
Peyvandi said on Friday that the Sea of Oman's coastal region has enormous potential for the establishment of petrochemical complexes.

Due to their closeness to consumer markets, the Sea of Omans coasts have a very good potential for establishment of petrochemical complexes, he said.

The official also pointed to the Iranian Petroleum Ministrys policy of developing new petrochemical hubs to avoid excessive reliance on Irans current petrochemical powerhouse, Assalouyeh, adding, It is planned to establish petrochemical hubs in areas such as Jask, Chabahar and Iranshahr, which are located across or near the Sea of Oman.

He further added that the Southeastern town of Iranshahr has the highest potential to turn into Irans petrochemical hub due to its closeness to the Sea of Oman and the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline.

The official pointed out that Iranshahr is 1,000 kilometers closer to destination markets such as India and China, in comparison to other petrochemical complexes such as Assalouyeh and Mahshahr.

He said that the water needed by the planned petrochemical complex in Iranshahr will be provided from the Sea of Oman and the required natural gas will be transferred from Iran-Pakistan pipeline.

Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical products over the past few years, and the NPC has become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.

Iran exports petrochemical products to more than 60 countries. The main destinations include the Far East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa.
