Photo: Snakeshead lilies in Kuhrang plain

By: Ahmad Riahi Dehkordi
According to The Iran Project,Fritillaria or snakeshead lily is a rare plant species normally found in mountainous areas of Iran’s Zagros region. With an area of 3,600 hectares, the Kuhrang Plain in central Iran is the largest habitat of the flower which many believe is on the verge of extinction. Tourists visits, picking the flower for plantation in small gardens, trampling, excessive grazing and periods of drought have accelerated the extinction process for snakeshead lily in Kuhrang Plain. However, authorities have imposed restrictions on tourist visits to the site in the past five years, helping to rejuvenate the Plain and leading to new germinations of the plant.
