Sputnik News- US Congressman Michael McCaul has introduced a bill directing the US State Department to determine whether the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) should be added to the list of terrorist groups. Journalist Hassan Shemshadi told Sputnik that this move should be viewed as an attempt by Washington to spark regime change in Iran.

"US politicians are extremely unhappy that the IRGC's influence inthe region is growing and that the trust [in the Revolutionary Guards] has become greater," he said. "Such resolutions are clearly aimed atchanging the regime inIran. However, they have failed for37 years and will unlikely achieve anything this time." Shemshadi, an Iranian Radio and Television correspondent inSyria and Iraq, further said that the Democrats and the Republicans inthe US have been opposed tothe political system in Iran forfour decades.

"The IRGC is meant toguard the principles ofthe Islamic revolution, the constitution and the political system ofour country. This is why various draft resolutions and draft laws put forward inthe United States inthe last 37 years have been targeted againstthe political system inour country and those, who protect it," he explained.

The war correspondent also said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has upset Washington's strategy inthe Middle East. "The United States has been trying tocarry outa regime change inSyria, a sovereign country," he said. "However, major support provided bythe IRGC tothe Syrian people intheir fight againstDaesh has prevented the US fromimplementing their plans. [In addition], the Iraqi Armed Forces have been able tostand againstterrorists and push them fromtheir lands thanks tothe active involvement ofthe IRGC military advisors." The bill, sponsored byMcCaul and US Senator Ted Cruz, was introduced intothe US Congress onJanuary 10, withthe former accusing the IRGC offunding and training "terrorist proxies" abroad, aswell asputting the US allies inthe Middle East "at risk" and threatening US national security interests. McCaul and Cruz introduced similar legislation inJanuary 2015.
Shemshadi maintained that the future ofthe act will depend onUS President-elect Donald Trump's stance onthe issue, butit will not really affect Washington's attitude towardIran.

"We need tounderstand that regardless ofwhether this bill is passed or not, it will not change the key trend inUS foreign policy, the hostility towardsthe political system inIran and its structures. Even if this bill is passed, it does not mean that the IRGC will become less active. The Revolutionary Guards will continue toprotect the tenets ofour constitution and fulfil their duties," he said.
