Sputnik- Days before the arrival of 2017, Irans air force was busy testing its homemade Talash air defense system as part of an exercise dubbed Defenders of Velayat Skies 7, which some see as a military demonstration to warn potential adversaries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and even the US, to stay away.
The tests began withthe launch ofIranian-made Sayyad-2 surface-to-air missiles inthe southern region ofIran nearBushehr. Tasnim News Agency, run bythe Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization, reported that the tests included the first launch ofa Sayyad-3, which boasts a longer range thanthe Sayyad-2. The Sayyad-2 is a medium-range, high-altitude missile that Iranian defense officials originally planned tobolster the firepower ofIrans frigates. The dry-run ofthe Iranian-made Ofoq fire control radar, which calculates the path formissiles tohit targets, added toa swelling oflocal pride inwake ofthe successful launch.
Bushehr is a coastal city onthe Persian Gulf acrossfrom Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait. Irans Air Defense forces are also carrying outa large-scale military simulation inthe provinces ofHormozgan and Khuzestan, according toTasnim.
Weapons testing nearthe Hormozgan province could prove more worrying forChina, the US, and Europe, which rely onoil transported throughthe Strait ofHormuz. Indeed, some 20 percent ofthe worlds oil flows throughthe ever-important waterway per day. In December 2011, an Iranian naval commander said closing the strait would be "easier thandrinking a glass ofwater." Approximately 75 percent ofoil aboardthe cargo ships passing throughthe strait is headed forAsia, according toexpert estimates.
