Sputnik- Tehran has shown interest in signing a temporary deal with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). While Iran has already established close relations with Russia and China, Tehran's future membership in the EAEU will further strengthen the country's alliance with the Eurasian major players, Iranian expert Hamidreza Azizi told Sputnik.
Iran may sign a temporary agreement withthe Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) opening the door tothe creation ofa free trade zone, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan signaled Monday followingIranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit toArmenia.
"The president ofIran has shown interest insigning a temporary deal withthe EAEU, leading tothe creation ofa free trade zone. Speaking to Sputnik Persian, Hamidreza Azizi, assistant professor ofregional studies atShahid Beheshti University, Tehran, and expert inEurasian affairs, underscored that one ofTehran's foreign policy imperatives is tobolster economic ties withRussia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. "When inAugust 2013 Hassan Rouhani assumed the presidency, he proclaimed the policy ofeconomic integration withkey regional players Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. For the first time sincethe formation ofthe CIS [Commonwealth ofIndependent States] the development ofrelations withthe countries ofthe bloc has become Iran's foreign policy priority," Azizi emphasized.
Last week the Iranian President made a tour toArmenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan aimed atbolstering economic and political ties withthe nations. "In the current circumstances ofthe region, the more we improve relations withthe countries ofthe region and our neighbors, the better we can stand againstinsecurity, instability and terrorism that have engulfed the region," Rouhani told reporters afterreturning fromhis Central Asian and Caucasus tour. "During the visits, we also discussed the development ofties betweenthe Islamic Republic ofIran and the members ofthe EAEU inthe fields oftariffs and preferential trade and Iran's membership inthe union," the Iranian President highlighted.
Azizi underscored that one should not overlook the role played byIran's strained relations withthe US and EU inaccelerating rapprochement betweenTehran, Moscow and Beijing. Fortunately, the conclusion ofthe Iranian nuclear deal has paved the way fordeepening Iran's collaboration withother countries and blocs, he added.
"In light ofthis important event Dr. Rouhani has committed himself toactive implementation ofhis presidential program aimed atjoining regional unions and blocs, inparticular, the EAEU," the Iranian academic elaborated. Azizi pointed outthat Russia is playing an important part inthis process. "Moscow plays a crucial role inthis process," the academic noted, "In the pasttwo years the Russian Federation has signaled keen interest and then has taken necessary diplomatic efforts toform regional alliances withinfluential political players," he told Sputnik, referring toIran asone ofthese political actors.
Azizi called attention tothe fact that Moscow and Tehran are both interested infurther rapprochement. The academic added that inthe last few years Iran has bolstered cooperation withmany ofEAEU member states. He referred, forinstance, tothe Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway project part ofthe comprehensive North-South International Transport Corridor initiative stressing that these efforts have created "fertile ground forIran's membership inthe EAEU."
"Iran's foreign policy is aimed atstrengthening and expanding partnership withkey players onthe political arena throughjoining regional alliances," the academic explained. "Yes, we have very strong ties withRussia and China. But membership insuch organizations asthe EAEU can further strengthen our cooperation. So, I believe that the next step onthis way is tostudy all the details forthis integration," Azizi underscored.
In addition, Iran is considering joining yet another influential Eurasian bloc the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The political, economic, and military was founded back in2001 inShanghai bythe leaders ofChina, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
In his November interview withSputnik Persian, Azizi underscored that Iran is committed tofurther rapprochement withChina and Russia withinthe SCO framework. "After an agreement was reached onthe Iran nuclear program and the realization ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) has been kicked off, all barriers toIran's integration toregional and international organizations have been removed," the academic told Sputnik inlate November.
