Western states 'Dishonest', cannot be counted on - Assad

Syrian President Bashar Assad thinks that the situation in Syria proved that the West was dishonest.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) Syrian President Bashar Assad told Sputnik that Syria's most important lesson the country learned was that the West was not honest.

"The most important lesson we have learned, butI suppose we knew it all along, is that the West is not honest. Western countries are dishonest. They are pursuing a policy far removed fromthe principles ofinternational law and the United Nations. It is impossible torely uponthe West tosolve any issue. The better friends you have, the quicker and withminimal losses a decision is reached. Therefore, every statesman should be able tochoose friendly states that will stand byhim duringcrises," Assad said.

The president said he did not wish any other country toexperience what Syria had togo throughand stressed that any manifestation offanaticism should be avoided.

"We had toendure inhumane suffering. However, we live ina world where there is no international law or morality inpolitics atpresent. Anything can happen anywhere onour planet. But what I want tosay, based onour experience inSyria, is that, first ofall, any manifestation offanaticism, either religious, political, or obsession withany idea is destructive forsociety. It is necessary toavoid fanaticism when building societies. It is the duty ofthe state, aswell asthe responsibility ofall the existing elements ofsociety and every citizens duty," Assad said.

He added that ina critical situation, any country should rely onthe people living init and any course ofaction toresolve a crisis should take intoaccount people's customs and traditions.

"Another thing is, if this or any other crisis should happen inany country, the first thing any statesman should know is that the people are the countrys defenders. And when choosing a plan ofaction toresolve the crisis it is necessary that it meets the customs and traditions ofthe nation, its history and its essential aspirations. The solution cannot come fromoverseas. Friends can come toyou fromabroad tohelp, asit has happened today: fromRussia and Iran. However, if there is no internal will and good relations betweenthe people and the state, it is impossible tofind a solution," Assad said.

Syria has been torn bya proxy war since2011, asgovernment forces have been fighting opposition groups and extremists operating inthe country. The West has been vocal aboutwanting Assad tostep downas the Syrian leader, a view not shared byMoscow.

As a result ofthe war, 13.5 million Syrians have been left inneed ofhumanitarian assistance, according toUN figures. Over 6.5 million are internally displaced, while 4.8 million have fled the country amonghostilities.
