Iran to expand sour gas production capacity

Tehran, May 24, IRNA - Platform A of South Pars (SP) Phase 12 in Bushehr province will increase sour gas production capacity by 500m cubic feet (mcf) per day to reach 1b cubic feet per day.

This will be realized in two weeks once the two platforms are installed in the Persian Gulf.

Both platforms have successfully passed the preliminary tests in the Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company yard in Khorramshahr (Khuzestan province).

The platforms are expected to be installed in 40 days. Once the platforms are launched, sour gas extraction from the phase will reach 3 billion cubic feet per day from 2.5 billion cubic feet.

The target of implementing development project of SP Phase 12 is to produce 75m cubic meters (mcm) of natural gas, 120,000 barrels of gas condensates and 750 tons of sulfur daily.

The main contractor of the project is Petropars Company.

With the launch of gas sweetening unit of the second unit of SP Phase 12, its gas output will reach 25 mcm per day.

Shared by Qatar, South Pars is the largest gas field in the world located in the Persian Gulf waters.

South Pars holds 8 percent of total gas reserves of the world and half of the countrys proven gas reserves.

Iran, which sits on the worlds second largest natural gas reserves after Russia, is making efforts to boost its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investments, especially in the South Pars Gas Field.
