Commander: Anti-narcotics campaign successful

Tehran, Feb 9, IRNA Had the anti-narcotics campaign in Iran not been successful, narcotics trafficking mafia had dared to enter cities and get engaged in armed clashes, putting at stake countrys security, said commander of Border Guards of Iranian Police Force (IRIP) Saturday.

In camping against narcotic drugs trafficking the police forces all participate solidly, although the color of uniforms of the Anti-Narcotics Police differs with the color of attire of the Border Guards, but they both pursue the same objective, said Lieutenant General Hossein Zolfaqarion the sidelines of and Experts Level Conference of Anti-Narcotics Police Chiefs of Iranian Provinces.


He said that the countrys Border Guards have managed to harness the grouplets in dozens of armed clashes, adding that the enemies objective is making the general atmosphere inside Iran secure and they have plotted plans for this purpose beyond our borders.

The narcotic drugs issue is considered as a serious threat against the global security in the strategic documents of many advanced countries of the world side by side with the terrorism issue and the threats against the environment, reiterated the commander of IRIP Border Guards reiterated.

Lieutenant General Zolfaqari added, In an opinion poll launched by the Police Force, the narcotic drugs was marked as one of the major causes for the peoples worries, because it has been the root cause for many crimes in the society, including a major cause for divorce.

He said that some people argue that Iran has been fighting against narcotic drugs trafficking for so many years; what then is the result of this campaign? In response to that question I must say that beyond doubt that if it were not for this campaign the narcotic drugs mafia would have dared to enter the cities and get engaged in armed clashes, making the country insecure all over Iran.

If the narcotic drugs officers inspect the smugglers files free from any concern, it is due to the usefulness of this campaign, he said.

The commander of the Iranian Police Border Guards said that the spearhead of the campaign against narcotic drugs trafficking is the police forces, adding: Although the main duty of the Police Force is campaign against presentation of the narcotics in the society, but in the field of prevention, too, it plays a decisive role and it has gained precious information and experience that it can shared with the other concerned organizations.

Zolfaqari further emphasized that in campaign against narcotic drugs trafficking the countrys entire police and disciplinary forces work solidly, and the provision of supportive information by the Border Guards and the Anti-Narcotic Drugs Police for each other has led to the discovery and seizing of the major part of the narcotics in the border regions and on marginal areas of the border provinces.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used by smugglers as the main conduit for the smuggling of Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Over the past three decades, the country has spent millions of dollars to seal its borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade, a lucrative business originating in Afghanistan, has also claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers.

According to the UNODC World Drug Report 2013, Iran accounted for the highest rate of opium seizures (80 percent) as well as heroin seizures (30 percent) in the world this year.
