Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations has called for the full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), emphasizing that the Israeli regime must be forced to join the international treaty.
Politically-motivated approaches and decisions have undermined the authority and credibility of theOrganization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons(OPCW), Majid Takht-Ravanchi said during his speech at a UN Security Council session on Thursday on chemical weapons in Syria.
He noted that certain states are abusing the CWC and politically exploiting the OPCW in pursuit of their own interests, describing such practices as a challenge facing multilateralism.
Unfortunately, such conducts have seriously undermined the Convention, undercut the legitimacy and trust in the OPCW, and caused discord among member states.
This will further intensify the challenges of disarmament and non-proliferation, including the non-compliance of nuclear-armed states with their obligations under thenuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty(NPT), and will kick off new nuclear arms races and attempts to modernize the munitions at an alarming rate, the Iranian diplomat pointed out.
