Iran blasts Western media for false image of country under US sanctions


Sputnik - Western media's coverage of Iran under reimposed US sanctions does not reflect the current reality, Iranian Culture Minister Abbas Salehi said on Monday.



"The narratives ofWestern media ofthe Middle East developments are different fromthe reality onthe grounds. We should coordinate the subjects and contents inorder tocreate an opportunity forthe balance ofpower," the IRNA news agency quoted Salehi assaying onthe sidelines ofthe Organization ofAsia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) meeting inTehran.


According tothe official, Western media was painting a false picture ofIran underWashington's sanctions.

Sanctions Against Iran

In May, US President Donald Trump announced his country's decision toleave the Iran nuclear agreement and reimpose sanctions againstTehran and other countries doing business withIran. The first set ofeconomic restrictions, including a ban onpurchasing US currency, trading ingold and other precious metals, buying aluminum and steel forindustrial purposes, and performing activities related toIrans sovereign debt, took effect onAugust 5. The second portion, including sanctions onIran's port operations, energy sector and foreign transactions, will be effectuated inNovember.

After the sanctions took effect, some Western media have reported that they were having a devastating effect onIran's economy, including the collapse ofthe Iranian rial, inflation and power shortages.

Iran has refuted reports onthe economy being influenced byUS restrictions. In August, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attributed his country's current economic problems tointernal factors rather thansanctions.
