Sputnik - The possible withdrawal of Iranian troops 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Israeli border was discussed among other issues during the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Israel, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said.
"During Lavrov's visit, not only this issue was discussed, but also many other issues," Ushakov told reporters, answering whether withdrawal of Iranian troops was discussed during Lavrov's visit.
He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin had discussed the issues concerning the Syrian settlement with Netanyahu.
"The other steps are taken as a follow-up to this discussion, including Lavrov and Gerasimov's visit to Israel now," Ushakov added.
Lavrov and Chief ofRussia's General Staff Valery Gerasimov held a meeting onMonday withIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inJerusalem, and the sides discussed the progress inthe counterterrorism operation insouthern Syria, aswell asensuring security alongIsrael's borders.
Earlier, a high-ranking source inthe Israeli government told Sputnik that Israeli leadership ata meeting withLavrov and Gerasimov expressed interest inthe full withdrawal ofIranian forces fromSyria, butdid not reject any Russian proposal.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has also commented onthe media reports that Israel had rejected Moscow's proposal towithdraw the Iranian forces inSyria toa distance of100 kilometers (some 62 miles) fromthe Israeli border.
"These reports are not true. I can state responsibly that the talks between [Russian] Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chief ofthe General Staff Valery Gerasimov withPrime Minister Netanyahu were very constructive? The Israeli leadership highly appreciated the Russian efforts tocreate a zone ofde-escalation insouthwestern Syria, which included the withdrawal ofall non-Syrian armed groups fromthis region," deputy head ofthe ministry's information and press department Artyom Kozhin said inwrittencommentary.
A number ofWestern media outlets, Reuters inparticular, earlier speculated that duringa meeting witha high-ranking Russian delegation inJerusalem onJuly 23, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allegedly rejected a Russian proposal toallow the Iranian forces tostay inSyria ata distance ofnot less than100 kilometers fromthe disengagement line onthe Golan Heights.
The situation inSyria and the problem ofIran's military presence there have become the main topics ofthe talks inJerusalem withthe participation ofNetanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, which lasted more thantwo hours.
According tothe Haaretz newspaper, Israel also demanded towithdraw long-range weapons allowing the Iranians toovercome the buffer zone, toremove air defense systems covering them, and tostop cross-border delivery ofIranian weapons toSyria and Lebanon.
The publication cited an unnamed Israeli source, who said that the Israeli authorities prefer toact now, rather thanwait forIran toaccumulate "hundreds and thousands ofmissiles" inSyria and turn it into "another Lebanon."
Israel has repeatedly voiced concern overalleged Iranian military presence inSyria, while Tehran insisted that it has exclusively sent military advisors tothe Arab Republic inorder tohelp Damascus fight terrorism.
