Sputnik - An ex-chief of the Russian upper house's defense and security committee has claimed that Russia would continue to fulfill its obligations to Iran under the program of arms deliveries.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The possible abandoning byUS President Donald Trumpofa nuclear deal withIran will not affect Russia's implementation ofthe program ofarms deliveries toTehran from2020, inparticular, combat planes and helicopters, warships and missile systems, ex-chief ofthe Russian upper house's defense and security committee, Viktor Ozerov told Sputnik onFriday.

Earlier onThursday, the Washington Postnewspaper reported thatUSPresidentDonald Trumpintended to "de-certify" the nuclear deal withIran next week. According tothe newspaper, Trump is expected todeliver a speech onOctober 12, when he will open the door tomodifying the agreement aspart ofa tougher approach towardIran. Under the terms ofthe current nuclear agreement, Trump has untilOctober 15 tocertify Iran's compliance.
"There is a UN Security Council decision confirming Tehran's fulfillment ofall its obligations underthe nuclear program. Russia will fulfill all its obligations toIran, including the program ofarms deliveries from2020, they have not been withdrawn," Ozerov said.

Ozerov specified that in2020 the UN embargo onconventional arms export toIran would be lifted. From that point on, Iran will be able tolegally procure tanks, armored combat vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, combat jets and helicopters, military ships and missile systems fromforeign partners.

The United Nations imposed the arms embargo onIran inseveral steps. In 2006, the organization banned all exports oftechnology that could be used fordeveloping nuclear weapon delivery systems toIran. In 2007, the UN Security Council also outlawed arms export fromIran. Finally, inJune 2010, the United Nations put an embargo onall major conventional arms exports tothe Islamic Republic. The latest restrictions are expected tobe lifted five years afterthe day the JCPOA wasadopted,or inOctober 2020.

The possible US withdrawal may affect the prospects forSyrian settlement taking intoaccount the role ofTehran inthis process Ozerov added.
"Taking intoaccount Iran's position onSyria, Washington's withdrawal may affect Syrian settlement, which is carried outwith the participation ofTehran aswell," Ozerov said.

He also underlined that Washington's possible withdrawal fromthe nuclear deal withIran may prompt concerns inMoscow.
"If Washington withdraws fromthe nuclear deal withIran, Russia may get concerned that a similar thing will happen tothe Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which has been repeatedly mentioned bythe United States," Ozerov said.

The lawmaker added that Washington's possible pullout ofthe deal might come acrossas "a very negative signal" forPyongyang, asNorth Korea will see that even if it makes a step forward and phases outits nuclear program, the United States can nevertheless impose news sanctions onthe country.

Previously, the Russian State Duma's International Affairs Committee Chairman claimed thata possible US withdrawal fromthe nuclear deal withIran may lead topossible "outbreaks" fromTehran.
