Syria truce guarantors expected to sign 4 security zones document in Astana

Sputnik News- According to reports, ongoing talks on Syria in Astana may result in the adoption of a document on creating four security zones in Syria.

Ongoing talks onSyria inAstana may result inthe adoption ofa document oncreating four security zones inSyria, signed bythree ceasefire guarantor states, a source inone ofthe delegations told Sputnik.

"We expect a breakthrough. So far, this idea [of creating four zones ofde-escalation oftensions] is accepted byeveryone. We hope this document will be signed, " the source said Wednesday.

"At the level ofguarantor states," the source said, referring toRussia, Turkey and Iran, asked who would sign the document incase ofits adoption.

On Monday, Fatih Hassoun, a representative ofthe Syrian armed opposition told Sputnik, that Russia made proposals aimed atcreating zones ofde-escalation oftension and atrespect ofthe ceasefire regime. According tothe documents, obtained bySputnik, Russia proposed toset upfour security zones inIdlib province, tothe north ofthe city ofHoms, inEastern Ghouta and inthe south ofthe country.

In late January, US President Donald Trump announced the same kind ofinitiative tohelp refugees displaced bythe ongoing conflict inSyria. The proposal was criticized bythe Syrian government, which stated that any attempt tocreate the safe zones withoutcoordinating withDamascus would be a violation ofSyria's sovereignty.

The new roundof the Astana talks, which brings together the sides tothe Syrian conflict Damascus and armed opposition, aswell asthree ceasefire mediator states Russia, Iran and Turkey, kicked offon Wednesday, while a meeting atthe experts level took place onTuesday.

The first three rounds oftalks onthe Syrian settlement brokered byRussia, Turkey and Iran, were held inKazakh capital ofAstana onJanuary 23-24, February 15-16 and March 14-15. During the talks, the participants agreed toset upa ceasefire monitoring group, amongother points.
