Sputnik- Iran's production of the Bavar 373 ground-to-air missile system is progressing well, but its capabilities are unlikely to rival the Russian S-300, editor of Russian magazine "Arsenal of the Fatherland" Viktor Murakhovsky told RIA Novosti.

Earlier this week, Iran's deputy defense minister Amir Khatami announced that Iran is carrying outtests ofits Bavar (Belief) 373 long-range air defense system.

"Work withthe Bavar 373 complexes is progressing asplanned, testing ofthe complex has been carried out. These tests will continue tobe carried outuntil the complexes are delivered totheir units," Khatami said, RIA Novosti reported.

The Bavar 373, which has similar characteristics toRussia's S-300 system, was unveiled inAugust 2016. The project was launched inFebruary 2010, afterRussia suspended a $900 million deal signed in2007 todeliver the complex.

Russia stopped the delivery followingUN Security Council resolution 1929 that banned the sale ofweapons toIran. In April 2015, duringsuccessful negotiations betweenTehran and the 6+1 groups ofcountries regarding Iran's nuclear program, Russian President Vladimir Putin removed the embargo and Russia delivered the S-300 last year.

Nevertheless, Tehran has persevered withits plans toproduce its own ground-to-air missile system Iran unveiled the Bavar 373 inAugust 2016.

Editor ofRussian magazine "Arsenal ofthe Fatherland" Viktor Murakhovsky told RIA Novostithat production ofthe Bavar 373 is inthe experimental phase and assuch the system is far frommatching the capabilities ofRussia's S-300 system.
"The S-300 is a system onanother level, a long-range system which is developed and reliable. What the Iranians are doing is developmental work and the production ofprototypes. Nobody knows the real characteristics ofthis complex yet, including the Iranian media. I wouldn't expect this complex toenter intoservice withthe Iranian army inthe next few years," Murakhovsky said.

The expert added that so far, Iranian developments inmilitary equipment have been based onolder equipment fromthe Soviet Union or the UK.

"I don't really believe that the Iranians have started making something fromzero, taking intoaccount their level ofscientific and technical development. This is probably a creative copy ofan old complex. We can see this based onthe example ofthe Iranian anti-tank missile systems. One ofthem is almost a copy ofthe American TOW 2, which they received back then, and the second is a copy ofthe Soviet Konkurs. Exactly the same thing is happening withthe air defense systems," Murakhovsky said.

Editor of "National Defense" magazine Igor Korotchenko told RIA Novosti that Iranian experts will find it difficult tocopy such a complex system asthe S-300. He referred toChina's unsuccessful attempt toreplicate the S-300PMU-1 withits FD-2000, which lacks the anti-interference capacity and range ofthe Russian model.
"I can say withabsolute certainty that any attempts byforeign countries toclone or replicate the S-300 are doomed tofail. Even if they are able toproduce something, the anti-air missile system will be very different fromits Russian counterpart, and not ina good way."

Korotchenko recommended that the Iranians concentrate their efforts onobtaining more Russian surface-to-air missile systems rather thantrying tobuild their own.

"If Iran is thinking aboutits security then it doesn't need todevelop its own system, butcontinue topurchase Russian air defense systems, creating a layered system ofnational aerospace defense which will include firepower, radar and automated control systems," Korotchenko said.

The first video released ofIran's S-300 test strikes.

On Friday, Iran released the first video oftest strikes fromits S-300 system. Judging bythe reaction tothe test, it appears the missiles hit their targets.

Russia's S-300 surface-to-air missile system has a range ofup to150 km and can hit targets atan altitude ofup to27,000 meters traveling at2,800 meters per second. Its 92N6E multi-functional radar has a 400-kilometre range which is able toengage six targets simultaneously.

Lol
I do agree their system will lag behind the Russian system but it's not a good way to tell people Don't build your own weapons and Buy them from us plus Do not forget that due to the UN sanctions and other factors Russia delayed delivery of the system several times although Iran does not have a democratic and responsible regime!.
