How Turkey benefits from working with Russia, Iran on Syria

Sputnik News- Turkey cooperates with Russia and Iran to settle the Syrian conflict which is beneficial for solving the issue of consolidating the ceasefire in the war-torn country, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Sunday.


The Syrian ceasefire that came intoforce onDecember 30 is backed byRussia and Turkey, and has been holding upin general, despitecontinued reports ofviolations. The UN Security Council passed a resolution inDecember supporting the effort.
"First, we need toconsolidate the [Syrian] ceasefire. Together withRussia and sometimes withthe support ofIran we've made a lot ofachievements," Cavusoglu said, speaking atthe Munich Security Conference (MSC).


The Syrian settlement talks inAstana were conducive tobuilding confidence betweenparticipating parties, butit is necessary toreturn toGeneva talks, Cavusoglu added.


"Astana talks [were] important asa confidence building measure. But now we need toresume the Geneva talks, which is the main business forthe political solution and the political transition, which is the best solution forthe country."

The statement comes asthe Turkish military operation inSyria's al-Bab has entered the final stage. Turkey's units entered central al-Bab, the operation is being conducted incoordination withRussia toprevent clashes withSyrian government forces. On Tuesday, the Turkish Prime Minister said that most ofal-Bab is undercontol.

Moreover, Russian and Turkish military jets have repeatedly jointly bombed Daesh targets nearal-Bab inSyria.

Al-Bab is one ofDaeshs last remaining strongholds nearthe Turkish border. Capturing the city is ofstrategic importance toTurkey inorder toprevent the Syrian Kurds taking it and unifying their own territories.
