Iran critical of Canada over refusal to hand over ex-MBI chief

Tehran, June 8, IRNA Justice Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi said on Wednesday that Canada refuses to hand over former chief of Melli Bank of Iran Mahmoud Reza Khavari despite Canada signed up international anti-corruption treaty.

Mahmoud Reza Khavari is former chief of Melli Bank of Iran, a suspect in a 2011 embezzlement scandal. He escaped to Canada shortly before an arrest warrant was out.
Speaking to reporters, he said anti-corruption commission has many member states but most of them ignore to cooperate with the body, Pour- Mohammadi said.

Mahmoud Reza Khavari the then managing director of Bank Melli resigned in 2011 on pretext of of acute psychological disease and escaped to Canada.
Mahmoud Reza Khavari is a suspect in embezzlement scandal of 30,000 billion rials.

The fugitive is wanted by the Iranian judicial authorities and Interpol.
