Saudi Arabia starts work on 'long-term cooperation deal' with Iran

The Iran Project - On his way back from Jaddedh, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has stated that Saudi Arabia has taken preliminary steps toward establishing a long-term cooperation agreement with Iran.

He revealed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the kingdom's Foreign Minister to initiate these measures.

Once completed, the agreement will be signed by high-ranking officials from both countries.

Amirabdollahian two-day visit to the kingdom marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which was severed in 2016 following protests in Iran over the execution of a prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr BQIR ALI-NIMR.

However, in March of this year, the two nations reached a reconciliation deal, leading to the appointment of new ambassadors and the resumption of diplomatic ties.

During his visit, Amirabdollahian held a 90-minute meeting with the Saudi crown prince, with a focus on bilateral issues.

The foreign minister also noted that Saudi Arabia expressed a new attitude and readiness to open a new chapter in relations, suggesting that the region is on the verge of multilateral cooperation.

Additionally, Amirabdollahian announced that the Saudi Crown Prince has accepted an invitation to visit Iran, with plans to travel to Tehran at an opportune time.
