JCPOA joint commission convenes in Vienna

May 26, The Iran Project - The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) joint commission meeting held in Vienna's Cobourg Hotel on Friday (May 5) to continue consultations on mechanisms to maintain implementation of the deal.

For the first time since the deal came into force in 2015, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany have gathered at Iran's request without the United States, which pulled out on May 8.

Meanwhile, the Joint Commission was chaired, on behalf of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, by secretary General of European External Action Service Helga Schmid.

During the meeting also attended by Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), members of the JCPOA reaffirmed their support to the international pact and hailed the international bodys professional and impartial role in verifying Irans commitment to the deal.

They also described the JCPOA as a main part of the NPT and a very significant diplomatic achievement which has been approved by Resolution 2231.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who headed the Iranian delegation, arrived in Vienna on Thursday morning and held bilateral meetings with Schmid and head of Russia delegation before start of the JCPOA joint commission meeting.

Araqchi told reporters at the end of the JCPOA meeting that the negotiations were positive and all the remaining members of the JCPOA unanimously announced they will continue to fulfill their commitments under the deal.

They underlined their commitments to hold intensive talks with Iran and are trying to achieve practical ways for meeting Irans demands in various fields such as energy, oil, investment and trade, insurance and banking, Araqchi noted.

Finally, Schmid in an statement issued following the session said that members of the JCPOA reiterated their commitment to implement nuclear deal in good faith in a full, regular and effective manner.

Based on the statement, members of the JCPOA described lifting nuclear-related sanctions in a bid to normalize economic and trade ties with Iran as integral part of the nuclear deal.

In a meantime, the foreign ministers of the 28 Member States of the European Union will meet in Brussels on May 28 to explores ways of preserving Iran nuclear deal known.

The meeting will be a follow up to the EU summit of heads of states held in Sofia on May 16 in which the EU leaders declared their united stand on supporting the JCPOA.

A statement issued by the French foreign ministry said the European Union is determined to support the interests of companies and investors that may be affected by US sanctions.
