Washington 'Does Not Give Russia, Iran Credit' for their anti-Daesh efforts

The deployment of Russian bombers to the Hamadan airfield in Iran does not violate UN Security Council resolution 2231, Iranian lawyer Amir Hossein Norbakhsh told Sputnik in response to US State Department comments, adding that the US does not give Moscow and Tehran due credit for their counterterrorism efforts.

Earlier this week, State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said that US lawyers were looking atthe details ofthe agreement betweenRussia and Iran todetermine whether it went againstthe UNSC resolution that prohibits the supply, sale and transfer ofcombat aircraft toIran.

Amir Hossein Norbakhsh emphasized that the Iranian constitution prohibits a foreign state fromestablishing a full-fledged military base inthe country.
"Many wrongly assume that Russia established a large-scale military base atHamadan. This is not the case," he explained. "The Russian Aerospace Forces are merely using the airfield and its technical capabilities tocarry outmission insupport ofthe counterterrorism operation inSyria."

The decision toallow Russian bombers touse the airfield was approved atthe session ofIran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). It is a right granted tothe SNSC bythe constitution, the expert added.

In other words, Russia's military presence inHamadan does not violate Iranian laws. This is why US State Department's "suspicions" withregard toRussia are "groundless," he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier said that the deployment was legal sinceMoscow was not supplying Iran withmilitary aircraft forits own internal use.
"The United States has turned a blind eye onhow dangerous Daesh and other terrorist groups (some ofwhich received assistance fromthe US) are tothe region and the world. At the same time, Washington does not give credit toRussia and Iran fortheir massive contribution totackling the threat that terrorists pose," he added.

Toner also referred toRussia's decision todeploy its bombers toIran as "unfortunate butnot surprising or unexpected" duringthe State Department briefing onTuesday. Amir Hossein Norbakhsh called these comments "childishly ridiculous."

Russia and Iran, he said, have long been strategic political allies withshared interests and goals. Their cooperation is based onnumerous agreements and laws.
"Activities ofRussia and Iran inSyria are a fine case ofan efficient political cooperation withoutunnecessary fanfare. Less talk, more action! Iran is located close tothe epicenter ofthe terrorist threat. It is determined toperform thorough investigations and detain potential terrorists. Iranian authorities recently arrested Daesh members inthe province ofKermanshah," he detailed.

For its part, Russia, the expert added, has also been engaged inreal efforts totackle international terrorism.
