Iran's Alireza Faghani to referee at Rio 2016 Olympic

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Alireza Faghani of Iran has been chosen to officiate at the Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016.





His countryman Reza Sokhandan and Mohammad-Reza Mansouri will assist him in the prestigious competition.

Faghani made history by officiating the FIFA Club World Cup final, where Barcelona defeated River Plate 3-0 at the International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan.

He was named as the fourth referee for the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup between Brazil and Croatia.

Faghani was appointed to referee the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final, which was contested by South Korea and Australia.

The FIFA Referees Committee has confirmed the appointment of 88 match officials from over 40 countries to officiate at the event.

The mens competition will see 18 referees and 32 assistant referees officiate and at the womens tournament, 14 referees and 24 assistant referees will be on duty. In both competitions, all six FIFA Confederations will be represented.

The Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 represents the first important step on the road to the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 and the FIFA Womens World Cup France 2019 for match officials.

The Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 will take place from August 3rd 21st, with the competitions mens and womens finals taking place in the iconic Maracana stadium.
