TEHRAN (FNA)- Vice-Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi Fard called for more cooperation among the Asian states' legislatures through establishment of the continent's first ever parliament.
Speaking in a ceremony to mark the 8th anniversary formation of Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) on Monday, Aboutorabi Fard said in a meeting in Tehran in presence of 40 members, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly was upgraded into Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union.
He went on to say that the charter of the AIPU as the first political body of the Asian continent was then approved in Tehran after consultations with academics and experts from the member states.
Aboutorabi Fard underlined that the same process can happen to set up the Asian Parliament.
Iran is also a member of the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union, an important non-governmental parliamentary institution which was founded in 1889.
