Iranian President to visit Armenia for high-level talks on Wednesday

Sputnik- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will visit Yerevan on Wednesday for talks with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan, the Armenian president's press service said in a statement.

YEREVAN (Sputnik) According tothe statement, the two sides are expected tosign "a number ofdocuments onimproving bilateral relations ina number ofareas." "The presidents ofthe two countries will make statements atthe close ofthe talks and will also take part inthe Armenian-Iranian business forum," the press service said. The Iranian president will also meet Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan duringhis visit.

Armenia and Iran have enjoyed friendly relations sincethe former gained independence fromthe Soviet Union. Iran is home toa significant Armenian diaspora which is represented inthe country's parliament.

The two countries are also cooperating ona number ofeconomic projects. In December last year, Armenia, Georgia, Iran and Russia signed a memorandum onincreasing control overthe mutual exchange ofelectric energy, which included stipulations onthe creation ofa North-South energy corridor. In April, the four countries' energy ministers agreed toa roadmap tocreate the corridor by2019. Other projects include an international transport corridor linking Asia and Europe aswell asa railroad linking the two countries and opening Armenia tointernational trade flows.
