21 Dec 2016 - 9:11

Sputnik- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will visit Yerevan on Wednesday for talks with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan, the Armenian president's press service said in a statement.

YEREVAN (Sputnik) — According to the statement, the two sides are expected to sign "a number of documents on improving bilateral relations in a number of areas." "The presidents of the two countries will make statements at the close of the talks and will also take part in the Armenian-Iranian business forum," the press service said. The Iranian president will also meet Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan during his visit.

Armenia and Iran have enjoyed friendly relations since the former gained independence from the Soviet Union. Iran is home to a significant Armenian diaspora which is represented in the country's parliament.

The two countries are also cooperating on a number of economic projects. In December last year, Armenia, Georgia, Iran and Russia signed a memorandum on increasing control over the mutual exchange of electric energy, which included stipulations on the creation of a North-South energy corridor. In April, the four countries' energy ministers agreed to a roadmap to create the corridor by 2019. Other projects include an international transport corridor linking Asia and Europe as well as a railroad linking the two countries and opening Armenia to international trade flows.
