Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has appointed Marzieh Afkham as the first spokeswoman of Irans Foreign Ministry.
Afkham will replace Seyyed Abbas Araqchi.
She served as Foreign Ministry's Director General for Information and Press for eight years. The Iranian diplomat also served as Foreign Ministrys Director General for Public Diplomacy under former foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi.
Also on August 27, Araqchi announced that for the first time a woman would be appointed as an ambassador for the country. However, he did not name her.
The outgoing Foreign Ministry spokesman also described the appointment of a spokeswoman and a female ambassador as a step forward in the countrys foreign policy.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had pledged during his election campaign that discrimination between men and women will be eliminated in all social arenas in his administration.
Earlier this month, Rouhani appointed another woman, Elham Aminzadeh, as the vice president for legal affairs.
